Supermarket Savings Tips

Grocery Store

There are many ways to save money buying groceries. By using the tips below, you'll become a better shopper with more money in your pocket to show for your efforts.

Use coupons wisely.
Make sure to collect coupons for items you need and that are worthwhile purchases – no junk food. In addition, if a store offers discount coupons for amounts purchased such as $20 off when you spend $100, save those coupons and plan your next trip to the store right after they're usually offered.

Bring a calculator.
Supermarkets know that it's the wise shopper who buys in bulk. But be careful because now stores have begun to mix it up. Sometimes the larger bulk item costs less, while other times it can cost more. To be sure, you're getting the best deal, bring a calculator with you.

Don't shop when you're hungry.
It's been proven over and over again that people who shop when they're hungry buy more. Keep this in mind and eat a meal before you go food shopping or you'll come home with donuts chocolate bars and other high calorie treats you didn't plan on buying.

Buying one or two items? Don't use a basket.
When you only need that one or two items and you're running into the store to buy them, resist the temptation to use a basket. If you have a basket in hand, you'll likely buy more. Save the basket or shopping cart for larger purchases.

Here's an inside tip about the outside edge.
You will find all of your healthy food favorites such as baked goods, fresh meats, dairy products, and fruits and vegetables on the perimeter of the store. Most of the processed food choices will be in the middle aisles. As a bonus, the items on the edge of the supermarket tend to cost less too.

Make your groceries purchase in one trip.
If you make fewer trips to the grocery store, you'll have fewer opportunities to spend. You'll also save time, gas and wear and tear on your car.
