June Monthly Challenge Insulate yourself from high energy bills
Energy prices have been volatile if not downright hostile. This month's financial challenge is to get your house in order in terms of its energy use — do an energy audit. If you own a home, run through this list. If repairs or improvements are needed, do the cheap ones right away. For the more costly repairs, put them on a list to do whenever it makes sense financially.

Check your window caulk. Is it broken or missing?

Do all your windows that receive direct sunlight have shades to keep heat out during the air conditioning months?

Is your hot water heater set at the optimal temperature? If you can live with really warm water instead of scalding water you can save a lot of energy.

Check the weather stripping on all your exterior doors or doors that separate climate controlled spaces from non-climate controlled spaces like an attic. Is the weather stripping in good condition? Are there any gaps. If so, replace the material quickly.

If your home's central air/central heat unit is more than 10 years old and hasn't been serviced in a while, have a company test it for its efficiency. Keep in mind, this company might try to sell you a new unit. If they say you need a new one, get a second opinion first.

If you use your air conditioner a lot, are there any places you can add ceiling fans?

Check the exterior of your house. Would an awning protect a big window from the sun? Would more tree cover help keep the house cool? If landscaping is in your plans, keep these things in mind.

Monitor yours and your family's use of energy for a few days. Is everybody turning off lights and fans and computers when not in use?

Check the exposed insulation in attics, basements and crawlspaces. Are there any gaps?

Some energy companies will do a free home energy audit if you ask them. This is a good way to get knowledgeable information from folks who aren't trying to sell you something. Sometimes it doesn't make sense to make an expensive repair to save a little money on energy. But if you find such a situation, then it makes even more sense to make the inexpensive repairs.
